chinese herbal medicine

east asian cultures have been using herbal medicinals for thousands of years.  regarded as one of the oldest health care systems in the world, chinese herbal medicine takes a safe, natural and holistic approach, treating people from a wide range of cultural and social backgrounds.

although they can be used on their own, chinese herbs are often combined with acupuncture to work together to achieve greater and faster treatment results.  in contrast to western medicine, which often prescribes a  typical medication for a condition, a herbal prescription is designed specifically for you and your symptoms, allowing for a more targeted approach with minimal side effects.

as a holistic medicine all aspects of the body and its systems are considered, which can help determine the link between simultaneous signs and symptoms, and then be incorporated into the finalised herbal prescription.  at the Body and Soul Sunshine Coast a classical herbal approach is used.  like an art form, this style uses a smaller selection of herbs, with focus on restoring 'function' through refined and concise time-tested herbal recipes.

i prescribe plant based herbs (with the occasional exception of oyster shell (mu li)).  various parts of plants are used including seeds, fruits, barks, leaves, branches, roots, rhizomes and flowers, with many being food products (cinnamon, ginger, licorice, dates), which all follow strict growing and supply standards which meet australian therapeutic goods authority standards.  i prescribe herbs in a raw style, which means the actual parts of plants are used.  they are weighed out and dispensed individually by myself, without any manufacturing fillers or processes that come with other types of herbal medicines, and are specifically suited for your individual needs.

a raw formula is cooked and then strained and ingested like a tea.  often the herbs may taste unpleasant to begin with, however it is common that as treatment progresses your body welcomes the taste.  powdered herbal formulas are also available at the clinic and are prepared privately from raw herbs.  depending on your presentation, treatment approach and stage of treatment plan you may alternate between both raw and powdered styles.

i am registered as a chinese herbalist and herbal dispenser through AHPRA and ATMS, have practiced for 3 years under a highly regarded herbalist in melbourne using this style and am continuing my professional education by currently completing a diploma in canonical chinese herbal medicine through the ICEAM (institute of classics in east asian medicine).
