cupping

Cupping therapy is an ancient modality of alternative medicine, established thousands of years ago.  Today it involves glass cups (fire cupping style) being placed on the body using suction.  Air is removed using a flame to create a vaccum seal and may be used to perform stationary cupping, whereby cups are positioned on various areas and/or acupuncture points for the duration of the treatment, or moved around in a 'sliding cupping' style to stimulate a greater area.   Cupping may be used in conjunction with acupuncture treatments or massage therapy.

Cupping has many benefits including easing pain and inflammation, stimulating blood flow, deep tissue massage, for digestive or gynecological conditions and is very relaxing.

Considered as a type of gentle deep tissue massage, it involves the opposite movement.  Instead of applying pressure to muscles the suction created by the cups uses the pressure to pull the muscles, tissue and skin upward.  It has a strong detoxifying effect by stimulating numerous levels of tissue encouraging blood, lymph and 'qi' (energy) to flow more smoothly.

Due to the suction and detox effect, cupping usually generates a bruise like mark, which often fades in 2-4 days depending on your level of impeded flow in the area being treated.  This will not hurt or affect the skin once the mark has faded.
