paediatrics

although we often think infants and children are just mini people, their anatomy and physiology has many differences, therefore when it comes to treatment of their health concerns a different approach is often taken.

pediatrics is one of the oldest specialised modalities within chinese medicine, with several texts dating back to 200CE, in contrast to western medicines short history.

paediatric tui na is a specialised massage system that focuses purely on the treatment of infants and children.  it uses gentle hand movements in specific areas, mostly the hands, arms, spine and face, to help relieve common symptoms experienced by children.  these treatments are designed specific for your child and their presentation, are very easy, don't take long and usually get very quick relief, letting your little one get back to feeling good.  this style of treatment is a gentle form of therapy, with no side effects or strong medications, which can be difficult for young bodies to process.

after a quick treatment and demonstration, a short take home massage routine is given to continue the treatment in the comfort of your home, with your child often responding even better when treated by you.  infants can also be treated with acupressure (pressing acupuncture points), or very fine small needles (relatively painless) using only 2-4 needles retained for just a few minutes, and even herbs.

children’s anatomy and physiology is quite different from an adult’s.  their immaturity reflects this as well as their mental and emotional capacities.  as a result children have their own treatment principles and approach which highlights its specialty as its own standing modality in chinese medicine.

the following conditions can respond well to treatment:

  • digestive issues (diarrhea, constipation, abdominal distention, vomiting, indigestion)

  • sleep issues

  • coughs and colds, asthma,

  • headaches,

  • night crying

  • teething

the two main differences in paediatric physiology are:

1. the organs and bowels are not fully developed and therefore are easily affected.

2.  childrens constitution is pure 'yang'

this means as they are growing so rapidly and their anatomy is changing and maturing so quickly this yang constitution can easily become excessive as their yin component of the body is not strong enough yet.  this is seen in the tendency for fevers, getting sick more easily than adults and being full of energy and possibly hyperactive.

the positive of this is that children can recover quite quickly when treated accordingly.

i also offer treatment of post pregnancy for the mother.  aspects of breastfeeding, getting back into shape after birth, any emotional or hormonal imbalances and rebuilding and boosting the body after creating another little being.
